Helsinki – (SUB)URBAN BOULEVARD
PATCHWORK
Context info about Laajasalo:
Shaping the new Laajasalo with the urban boulevard opens the conversation about the transition from the suburban to urban identity. Patchwork is the needlework of versatile living settings. From micto to macro level of planning, the concept interweaves the physical structure with the situational urbanisms. On behalf of shaping sense of community in the new Laajasalo, place is conceptualized as the metamorphology of physical space – uses (or activities by residents and services) – meanings (or shared values for the new community). Altogether, smart mobility for PATCHWORK integrates with the places, where ICT technology can enhance the capacity of physical space and connect people in virtual space.

The development is planned into 3 phases to gradually generate the urban fabric and initiate the shared places for public participation. The large development should be planned hand in hand with the coming inhabitants and the existing Laajasalo people. The main identity is the urban green with the new park and the extended MARINA harbor. Smaller alleys between buildings create the porous transition from the dense boulevard to the intimate allotments near the water. Green necklace of Laajasalo resonates the natural value of the existing Tengströminpuisto park.

The new quarter will be WALKING CITY with bike sharing system. All the ground floor will be allocated a public living room for the inhabitants. These physical places also serve as the sharing points of smart grid for bike and care sharing. The pavement is treated with water-permeable material.
