Korpilahdenpuro

Our proposal reinterprets a historic, unrealized Korpilahdentie road by transforming it into a vibrant pedestrian pathway that connects the neighborhood through water and greenery. The buried stormwater sewer is uncovered as a meandering path, fostering ecological awareness and social interaction rooted in the area’s horticultural heritage. The site is divided into three zones combining green infrastructure and industrial heritage, creating spaces for stormwater management, community gathering, and new market life. Infill housing balances density with a domestic scale, promoting privacy, green access, and sustainable living. The design strengthens Vähäheikkilä’s identity by reconnecting its natural and social fabric.

  1. An excess of buildings with insufficient natural space, given the area’s history and existing building stock. The siting and architectural style are incompatible with the current structures, and the buildings are oversized for the area.

  2. In my opinion, the project does not create a real sense of community. That zig-zagging wall along the street is really disturbing, and the houses are not connected or tied in any meaningful way to the local culture. The river also feels too constrained in its channel.
